UK horse racing is divided into two main forms: Flat racing and Jump racing. Flat racing takes place on level tracks without obstacles and tests the speed, stamina and tactical ability of horses over distances ranging from five furlongs to over two miles. The most famous Flat race is the Epsom Derby, held annually at Epsom Downs Racecourse. The Flat season is strongest during spring and summer.
Jump racing, also called National Hunt racing, involves horses jumping hurdles or fences. It is usually held during autumn and winter on softer ground. There are two types: hurdle races and steeplechases. Jump racing demands endurance, bravery and jumping skill from both horse and jockey. Both forms are central to British sporting culture and attract large crowds and betting interest throughout the year.
